Looking to quite literally ram home the potential dangers of sending and receiving mobile phone text messages while behind the wheel of a vehicle, a new public service announcement (PSA) from the UK is adopting a savage and hard-hitting strategy that’s as harrowing as it is graphic.

The advisory film, which can be viewed below at the viewer’s discretion, shows the devastation caused when a young female driver composing a text message inadvertently veers her car into the path of oncoming traffic.
The resulting crash, filmed in slow motion, shows the driver and her two girlfriends being thrown around within the car as it impacts with another vehicle before spinning violently to a stop.
As if seeing the girls having their bloodied and battered heads slammed into the dashboard and through the car’s windows is not sufficiently disturbing, the initial crash is followed by a second as another vehicle suddenly ploughs into the scene and a fresh wave of violence ensues.
Created by Peter Watkins-Hughes and produced with the assistance of young British actors, the public information film is expected to be broadcast before school children in the UK.
Officials from Gwent Police have said they hope the film helps prevent future accidents caused by all drivers, but specifically accidents involving both young and new drivers.
“I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel and realise that a quick reply to a text message or answering a phone call is never worth putting theirs and other people’s lives at risk,” said Chief Inspector John Pavett of the Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit in a BBC report.
