Microsoft Corp., in an effort to divert attention from Sony’s recent unveiling of the PlayStation 3 Slim and an accompanying $100 USD, has trumpeted that its own powerhouse gaming platform will surpass one million sales in Australia and New Zealand by year’s end.

According to regional Xbox 360 product manager Jeremy Hinton, Microsoft’s latest console is not only the cheapest but also “the fastest growing console down under,” and the Redmond-based software giant is heading towards the million marker after surpassing 700,000 Xbox 360 unit sales in Australia.
“We expect to hit a million Xbox 360 consoles sold across Australia and New Zealand by the end of this year,” outlined Hinton in a GameSpot report.
“We’re confident we can reach this goal with the console’s current price point and the new experiences we’re bringing through Xbox Live such as Movie on Demand, Facebook and Twitter,” he added.
Presenting an address at an Xbox 360 event in Sydney, Hinton was also keen to point out that, while significant PlayStation 3 hardware price cuts are likely to help Sony in the marketplace, “the Australian consumer will still see the $299 AUD price point of Xbox 360 as the more compelling offer.”
“In the past… we might have been thinking about what Sony’s doing, but now things are different,” said the Xbox executive. “We’ve had our Christmas plans set for a long time and they won’t change simply because Sony’s plans do.”
