They don’t want to be true Europeans, they certainly don’t want the Euro, and now, if the word of watchful retail outlets can be trusted, it’s safe to say the British are not exactly mad keen on protecting the environment either.

More pointedly, a number of independent retailers across the pond in Blighty are reporting that wrinkled, anti-green consumers are purchasing old-fashioned 100 watt light bulbs in bulk ahead of their official phase out under new European law.
With some stores claiming many of their older customers are demanding up to 50 of the energy-sucking bulbs at a time, it would appear that going against European law while sticking two fingers up to the planet’s delicate balance is preferable to embracing the advantages of new, energy-saving bulbs.
While clearly showing the ignorant true colours of the nation’s older folk, panic buying due to a dislike of newfangled technology is apparently not necessary – even though many major retail chains now only stock the more energy-efficient products.
Talking with the BBC, one independent store owner from Wales said that although production will cease as of next month, a considerable stockpile of old light bulbs remains open to suppliers and there’s unlikely to be any great shortfall in the near future.
The new European Union legislation, which is designed to cut down on energy consumption, reduce electricity bills across the nation, and lower carbon emissions, requires that production of conventional light bulbs is ceased as of September 01 of this year.
