If the pixel power of a DSLR’s sensor is an all-encompassing requirement that governs just how quickly you reach for your wallet, then the arrival of Sony’s new beastly Alpha 850 means your money is already well and truly spent.
Cheap at half the price. Well, not quite. Image: Sony.
Arriving as a slightly scaled back version of its even more beastly Alpha 900, the new 850 series variant boasts the same whopping 24.6 mega pixel Exmor CMOS sensor as its upper-tier stablemate, but is expected to arrive attached to a (body-only) price tag of $2,000 USD – the price with an accompanying 28-75mm SAM lens will be $2,800 USD.
So what else can budding photo enthusiasts look forward to after splashing the cash for Sony’s latest slice of semi-pro image capture?
From an aesthetic point of view, the new Alpha 850 sports a rugged magnesium alloy body and a tensile aluminium chassis, while technical muscle is provided by dual BIONZ image engines, a 3.0-inch Xtra Fine TFT LCD screen (640x480), and the SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilisation system.
In terms of standout differences from the Alpha 900, the new 850 has a viewfinder with 98 percent coverage as opposed to 100 percent, its burst rate is 3fps instead of 5fps and the 900’s default remote control is an added extra on the 850.
The Sony Alpha 850, which includes HD compatibility with Sony BRAVIA televisions, is due to hit retail outlets this coming September. Pricing for the UK market has not yet been divulged by Sony.
