Leading videogame trade publication MCV is reporting that two particularly heavyweight retail chains in the UK have moved to reduce the price of Nintendo’s motion-sensing Wii home console.

While not an officially rubberstamped reduction from the Japanese gaming giant itself, price cuts announced by both ASDA and Sainsbury’s have been put forth as part of a limited-time promotion that ties in with the current bank holiday weekend across the pond.
ASDA’s offer sees the Wii hardware bundle priced at 145 GBP, which includes the Wii Remote and Nunchuk control system and popular software release Wii Sports. The Sainsbury’s promotion offers the same bundle of Nintendo’s market-leading home console priced at a few pennies below 150 GBP.
The Nintendo Wii reductions, which will soon revert back to their more regular price points, will likely benefit ASDA and Sainsbury’s in the wake of sweeping price cuts officially announced by both Sony and Microsoft for their respective PlayStation 3 (Slim) and Xbox 360 home consoles.
While Wii prices do vary somewhat from retailer to retailer and bundle-to-bundle, the basic UK asking price (for the package listed here) is generally accepted to range between 175 GBP and 200 GBP.
Such bank holiday weekend offers are commonplace in the UK, and MCV reports that Zavvi is selling the 120GB Elite model of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for 179.95 GBP, bundled along with award-winning shooter BioShock and an HDMI cable for high-definition gaming.
