Available as an automatic online download, firmware v3.00 delivers aesthetic tweaks such as a streamlined PlayStation 3 logo to the Xross Media Bar (XMB) along with a redesigned status indicator, Friends list, PSN shortcuts, new premium avatars and dynamic system themes, and enhanced Trophy support for games with add-ons.
New feature additions PS3 owners can look forward to include copy-paste and screen-capture functions for when Web browsing and sending messages, the ability to test Internet connection speed through the XMB, and a handy ‘What’s New’ section that displays new PlayStation Network content without having to trawl through the service.
Sony Insider reports that other fresh elements include BRAVIA-synch for Sony TVs, the addition of support for the BBC iPlayer and ABC iView catch-up services, and audio up-scaling (for stored content) to 88.2KHz or 176.4KHz.
The arrival of firmware v3.00 and its new features comes less than two weeks after Sony ended longstanding industry rumours by using the GamesCom trade fair in Germany to announce the redesigned PlayStation 3 Slim and accompanying regional price cuts to the hardware.
