As is so often the way with major firmware updates for videogame consoles, there’s no pleasing everyone. Specifically, while some PlayStation 3 owners are bemoaning the apparent lack of new features in Firmware Version 3.00 (v3.00), some have reportedly been struck by inexplicable game freezes.

Given that prior firmware updates on rival consoles have been known to ‘brick’ host systems, rendering them largely unusable, the odd game freeze here and there may seem like something of a non-event – but that doesn’t mean its not an annoyance PlayStation 3 owners would rather be without.
According to a report by Examiner.com, some of the PlayStation titles susceptible to sudden freezing following the v3.00 download include action adventure Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, award-winning underwater shooter BioShock, and popular brawler UFC 2009: Undisputed.
Investigating those claims, The Tech Herald duly dug out a copy of Uncharted, installed the firmware update (nice XMB refresh), and began Nathan Drake’s quest anew.
While we didn’t experience any freezes during three hours of gameplay, the on-screen action did occasionally stutter quite drastically – something it certainly did not do the first time we enjoyed Drake’s quest for golden fortune.
Either way, sporadic game freezes on a handful of games isn’t a serious mess for Sony to clean up, and a quick patch update will probably arrive in the near future in order to solve any such issues.
And, look at it this way, at least PlayStation 3 owners don’t have to worry about using their crippled consoles as door jams – something all-too familiar for early Xbox 360 buyers.
