Having recently announced the Booklet 3G, its virgin entrant to the ultra-mobile personal computer market, handset giant Nokia Corp. has used this week’s Nokia Show 09 in Stuttgart to drop a few more tantalising details regarding the upcoming system.

By all accounts a fairly respectable Netbook augmented by snazzy branding, high-speed 3G connectivity and integrated GPS functionality, Nokia’s Booklet 3G platform will carry Intel’s Atom Z530 mobile processor (1.6GHz), a full gigabyte of RAM, and a 1.8-inch HDD with a generous storage capacity of 120GBs.
Adding to the robustness and versatility of UMPCs, the Booklet 3G’s chassis is machined from a single piece of aluminium and will also come complete with Microsoft’s new Windows 7 operating system (in choices of Starter Edition, Home Premium or Professional).
And, pushing the boundaries of single-charge operation, the Booklet 3G will be equipped with a hefty 16-cell lithium-ion battery pack, which will reportedly offer up a whopping 12 hours of on-the-go usage – which is a significant plus point.
While its 10.1-inch LCD screen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and shoulder-friendly weight of just 1.25kg certainly add to the Booklet 3G’s chances of taking the Netbook sector by storm, its asking price may be something of a deal breaker.
Specifically, Nokia is not only looking for prospective buyers to favour the Booklet 3G over the likes of the ASUS Eee PC, Dell Mini and Acer Aspire One, it also expects them to accept a €575 Euro retail tag (approx. $815 USD), which pushes way beyond established Netbook prices.
While the Booklet 3G has plenty going for it and will likely arrive as a thoroughly decent portable option, we can’t help but think it might be worth holding on to our cash ahead of the upcoming Apple Tablet (a.k.a. iPad), which will also reportedly carry a price around the $800 USD mark.
