Leading U.S. telecommunications provider and exclusive iPhone carrier AT&T Inc. has said it plans to significantly improve the quality of its high-speed 3G service across six major cities in the United States in the next few months.

According to Texas-based AT&T, the network upgrades are expected to be implemented before the close of 2009 and will see its 3G service bolstered by High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology.
In terms of geographic spread, AT&T’s network boost will initially be rolled out in: Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; and Miami, Florida.
While the listed cities will be the first to receive the improvements associated with HSPA 7.2, AT&T has said the speedier technology will be implemented across approximately 90 percent of its 3G network by the close of 2011.
“With HSPA 7.2, we’re making the nation’s fastest 3G network even faster, and we’ll be able to deploy this technology before LTE [Long Term Evolution] networks, devices and equipment grow to scale,” enthused John Stankey, president and chief executive of operations at AT&T.
“Even as we look forward to LTE, we know that 3G will be the prominent mobile broadband network technology worldwide for smartphones for the next few years,” he added. “AT&T’s strategy will deliver faster 3G speeds, while also allowing us to build the foundation for the 4G future.”
The unveiling of AT&T’s plan comes only a few weeks after the operator said it will spend some $17 billion USD on network enhancements before the end of the year.
