If you’ve spent much of the day convinced something is oddly different about the standard Google home page, then we’re happy to let you know your suspicions are well founded because the central search query box has been “super-sized” by the California-based technology giant.
Bigger, although not necessarily better. Image: Google.
While some may have launched their computer’s browser this morning only to suffer the chilling fear associated with staring at a cunning online approximation concocted by the criminally inclined in order to rob them of everything they own… Google has been quick to explain away the seemingly aesthetic alteration.
“Although this is a very simple idea and an even simpler change, we’re excited about it – because it symbolizes our focus on search and because it makes our clean, minimalist homepage even easier and more fun to use,” wrote Google vice president Marissa Mayer on the company’s official blog.
According to Google, the combination of a larger search box, input text, and low-slung buttons will enable users to see their search parameters more clearly and make it easier for them to select one of the possible refinements.
“Over the past 11 years, we’ve made a number of changes to our homepage,” added Mayer. “Some are small and some are large. In this case, it’s a small change that makes search more prominent.”
In related news, Google has announced that more than five million students around the world have “gone Google” and will be returning to school in the fall with Google Apps Education Edition at their fingertips via their campus networks.
