The smartphone bandwagon may currently be standing room only, but that hasn’t stopped consumer electronics heavyweight LG Mobile from elbowing its way aboard with the new GW620 ‘Etna’ handset.

Recently leaked during the IFA Consumer Electronics trade fair in Berlin, the GW620 at least attempts to rise above the swollen smartphone ranks by coming equipped with the popular open-source Android mobile operating system (OS) and a focus on quick access to social networking destinations.
So, beyond the inclusion of the Google-backed OS, what else has LG Mobile crammed inside the GW620 in order to tempt prospective consumers away from the likes of the Apple iPhone, the Palm Pre, or any of RIM’s desirable BlackBerry platforms?
Equipped with a solid 3.0-inch display with touch-screen capabilities, the GW620 also has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, LG’s S-Class user interface (UI) skinned over the Android OS, and also a 5.0 mega pixel camera with video recording functionality.
“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” trumpeted Dr. Skott Ahn, president and chief executive of LG Mobile.
“Out objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphone to satisfy the diverse preference of today’s customers,” he continued. “This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”
Other contributing aspects include support for a wealth of Google-provided services, built-in GPS navigation, push e-mail, and Wi-Fi and HSDPA network connectivity.
The LG GW620 smartphone is expected to hit retail before the close of 2009, and LG should reveal regional availability and pricing in the coming weeks.
