When pitting the appeal of Guitar Hero 5 against the musical juggernaut that is The Beatles: Rock Band, you’d be forgiven for thinking that The Fab Four’s musical history and reputation would perhaps see the latter software release setting the pace at retail.

However, when it comes to the (progressively over populated) music-rhythm genre, it would appear the much publicised arrival of The Beatles: Rock Band has failed to negatively affect sales momentum amassed by the latest edition of publisher Activision’s Guitar Hero franchise.
“It did not affect our sales,” said Activision division head Dan Rosensweig in a Financial Times report, before also claiming that Guitar Hero 5 has thus far out performed The Beatles: Rock Band by a ratio of four-to-one in the U.S market and nine-to-one in other markets.
Despite Activision’s apparent success with Guitar Hero 5, which offers an eclectic blend of tracks from a host of different recording artists, the creators of The Beatles: Rock Band have also been keen to highlight their game’s warm reception at retail.
“Sales have exceeded our internal projection and we’ve sold 25 per cent of our inventory in the first week,” commented Philippe Dauman, chief executive of MTV Games/Harmonix parent company Viacom, during this week’s Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference in New York.
