The recent arrival of the PS3 Slim has marked something of a topsy-turvy few weeks for videogame retailers in Japan. More pointedly, pre-launch PlayStation 3 hardware figures dropped to a mere 1,040 units, while post-Slim weekly sales numbers rocketed to a staggering 151,000.

Continuing the current trend of peaks and troughs for Sony’s powerhouse console, the latest Media Create numbers for the region (week ending Sept. 13) show the PS3 has lost considerable momentum, dropping to 55,344 unit sales.
Despite a retail performance drop-off of almost 100,000 units, Sony’s revamped home system is still holding fast against core market consoles the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360, which racked up weekly unit sales of 17,568 and 7,568 respectively.
Beyond the home console market, Nintendo’s best-selling handheld DS console (DSi and DS Lite) combined for weekly sales in excess of 77,500 units, (66,498 and 11,179), while the popular Sony PlayStation Portable posted unit sales of 18,375.
DS sales were boosted by the release of Pokemon Soul Silver and Pokemon Heart Gold for the little clamshell platform, which sold a respective 723,000 and 720,000 units across the region.
