If you think today’s bevy of Internet tablet devices are still too big and too expensive to offer true portable computing convenience, then the following slice of gadget news could potentially tease a beaming smile from your face – and money from your pocket.
Who needs Windows Mobile, when you can have XP on your phone? Image: In Technology.
More pointedly, a creative device maker in China has come up with a mobile phone handset that eschews the scaled back Windows Mobile operating system in favour of Microsoft’s stalwart Windows XP platform.
Offered up by In Technology, the snappily titled xpPhone is powered by an AMD Super Mobile processor and is supported by an extremely spacious 4.8-inch LCD touch screen (800 x 400), up to 1GB of RAM, and data storage capacities of 64GBs and 120GBs in either SSD or HDD.
While certainly not exactly an Internet tablet device from a physical perspective, the xpPhone attempts to create a well-rounded user experience thanks to a wealth of contributing attributes such as a slide-out QWERTY keyboard (with a numerical pad), HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth, and GPS navigation.
Sadly, the pseudo tablet falls a little short in the multimedia transfer stakes thanks to the inclusion of a VGA-out port as opposed to HDMI, while its rather basic 1.3 mega pixel digital camera is, well, rather basic – especially given that 5.0 mega pixels are all-but standard in the majority of high-end handsets.
While the xpPhone is certainly a tantalising prospect, it remains to be seen if In Technology’s sassy category-straddling device ever sees a retail release, not least because its product page includes neither pricing details nor regional release information.
Still, it does look fabulous on paper, we’ll give it that much.
