Arriving just 24 hours after France Telecom’s Orange revealed a carriage deal with Apple Inc. that will end O2’s iPhone exclusivity in the UK, rival operator Vodafone has also announced it intends to start selling the iconic touch-screen handset across the region.

However, while the parameters of Orange’s deal reveal the mobile network giant will begin offering the iPhone before the close of this year, Vodafone’s agreement with Cupertino-based Apple will not go into effect until the early part of 2010.
Much as with Orange, a Vodafone representative has said the company is not yet in a position to confirm specific handset pricing or data plans – although prospective buyers can register their interest well ahead of time.
Initial industry reaction to the upcoming three-way split between O2, Orange and Vodafone suggest the shared carriage will help create competition throughout the UK and Ireland and drive down related prices in the process.
Current pricing plans offered by O2 mean customers can secure an iPhone 3G without charge as long as they commit to a two-year service contract running at a minimum of 34 GBP per month. The recently released iPhone 3GS comes free with a 73 GBP per month two-year contract.
