With the prospect of losing iPhone exclusivity hanging over it, American network operator AT&T appears rather keen to extend its portfolio of similarly desirable devices. To compound that notion, the mobile carrier has this week announced the upcoming availability of the geographically aware Garmin nuvifone G60.
Is it a mobile phone, or is it an in-car GPS system? Tis both! Image: Garmin.
Officially expected to arrive on AT&T’s high-speed network on October 04, the satellite navigation specialist’s G60 handset comes equipped with a real GPS receiver and is also preloaded with maps and millions of points of interest (POI) covering the whole of North America.
Far from being just another conventional mobile phone handset, the nuvifone G60 can also be easily mounted as an in-car navigation solution and comes complete with Garmin’s HotFix technology and assisted GPS support.
Other attributes crammed aboard the G60 include a touch-screen virtual keyboard, a 3.0 mega pixel camera with auto focus, image geotagging, a full HTML Web browser, high-speed 3G connectivity via AT&T’s network, and access to some 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots.
Hitting AT&T stores from October 04, the Garmin nuvifone G60 costs $299 USD along with a mandatory two-year service agreement and a $100 USD mail-in rebate.
Associated Garmin Nuvifone Premium Connected services on the G60 include traffic updates, white pages, weather, movie, local events and fuel price content – although these come for $5.99 USD per month after a free 30-day trial.
