Despite considerable critical acclaim and intense ‘killer app’ expectation, recent platform exclusives LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 failed to spark hardware sales for the PlayStation 3.

However, arriving hot on the heels of a long-awaited hardware price cut and the introduction of the PS3 Slim, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves might just be the retail inspiration Sony has been waiting for.
More pointedly, while LittleBigPlanet’s niche charm fell short of the mark, and Killzone 2’s intense violence restricted appeal, Uncharted 2 is built on lavish adventure filled with rewarding exploration, treasure hunting, great humour, cinematic atmosphere and, in wise-cracking protagonist Nathan Drake, possibly the most likeable videogame character in years.
Due to hit retail this coming October 13, consumer expectation is certainly heading towards fever pitch and, with Sony expected to offer up a PlayStation 3 hardware package that includes Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, rocketing console sales could well be on the retail horizon for the Japanese consumer electronics giant.
Moreover, advance reviews of the game suggest Uncharted 2: Among Thieves will not only surpass the established qualities of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, but will also trounce all existing competition to become the PlayStation 3’s biggest and best slice of exclusive videogame software.
According to review aggregation service Metacritic, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has already amassed 12 perfect 100/100 scores from respected media outlets such as Eurogamer, CVG and 1UP with the former describing the game as “an action-adventure masterpiece,” while the latter enthuses that Uncharted 2 “is simply a vast improvement over its predecessor, and it’s a damn great PS3 game.”
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves presently boasts an aggregate Metacritic review score of 97/100 spread across a total of 21 reviews. LittleBigPlanet currently holds the highest Metacritic score as a PS3 exclusive – although that score of 95/100 is spread over 85 reviews.
