Chances are the upper echelons of Microsoft will be sleeping a little more soundly from today following news that a recent patent infringement fine of $388 million USD has been quashed after the software corporation won its hastily lodged appeal.

More pointedly, Microsoft Corp. has emerged unscathed from the much publicised technology patent dispute with anti-piracy specialist Uniloc after a U.S. District Judge sided with the Redmond-based company and threw out the initial jury verdict against it.
In overturning the decision, Judge William Smith of Providence, Rhode Island, explained that the jury in the case “lacked a grasp of the issues before it and reached a finding without a legally sufficient basis.”
The long-running battle between Uniloc and Microsoft was based upon Uniloc’s claims that Microsoft had infringed upon its security technology in producing hugely profitable products such as the Windows XP operating system and the Office productivity suite.
“We are pleased that the court has vacated the jury verdict and entered judgement in favor of Microsoft,” commented Microsoft spokesman Kevin Kutz.
Uniloc has not yet released an official response to the ruling.
