Recently released sci-fi action videogame Halo 3: ODST, which is the first series shooter to not include the iconic Master Chief, has quite clearly shown there’s plenty of life left in Microsoft’s flagship property. That’s not to say the Chief is considered to be a spent force – far from it, in fact.

Moreover, while 2.5 million sales attributed to ODST show the open-world shooter to be something of a breath of fresh air for the popular Halo universe, 343 Industries’ Frank O’Connor has said Halo fans can look forward to considerably more Master Chief in the future.
According to O’Connor, a veteran of Halo developer Bungie, both Master Chief and his A.I. companion Cortana are likely to be back in action sooner rather than later – not least because of the ominous climax of ODST (warning: possible spoiler follows).
“As for Master Chief, odds are we’ll see him again,” O’Connor said in a USA Today report.
“I think that [the Chief’s] fate, along with Cortana’s fate, and the identity of that giant, dark planet at the ending – that’s a spoiler – are probably big mysteries that would be irritating if they were just cliffhangers,” he added.
Although O’Connor wasn’t willing to divulge exact details regarding the return of Master Chief and Cortana, he did at least say “it will become very evident that there is a plan for the way the cannon all ties together and the way the comic books and the novels all tie together.”
