VeriSign and RSA, two security giants in the corporate landscape, recently announced that they will team up and offer customers the ability to use RSA SecurID on VeriSign’s VIP service.
VeriSign and RSA move to integrate SecurID and VIP
VeriSign’s Identity Protection (VIP) Authentication Service provides users with a single use one-time password (OTP) to layer the authentication security on various websites. This recent announcement with RSA means that customers can use VIP in conjunction with RSA SecurID hardware tokens.
“The alliance of two powerhouses with the integration of RSA SecurID technology into VIP will strengthen their combined market leadership and work to increase the collective clout of both VeriSign and RSA,” said Mary T. Monahan, managing partner and research director at Javelin Strategy & Research.
RSA has long been a known provider of two-factor authentication services, since they launched the security platform twenty-five years ago. While this is a new development between RSA and VeriSign, the two companies have always had a long working relationship.
“Inventive collaboration between key industry leaders is critical to delivering higher value to customers and responding to the ever-changing threat environment,” said Art Coviello, executive vice president of EMC Corp. and president of RSA. “Together with VeriSign, we’ve worked hard over the decades to help ensure online transactions are safe, secure and trustworthy.”
VeriSign said that they plan to complete the integration of the RSA SecurID Authentication Engine into the VIP Authentication Service by the end of December 2009, enabling VIP customers to use RSA SecurID hardware authenticators. At that time, VeriSign will also resell RSA SecurID hardware tokens, and RSA will resell the VIP Authentication Service.
As part of the agreement, the companies will work to transfer all existing RSA GoID customers to the VIP Authentication Service by the end of Q2 2010. RSA will work closely with all existing RSA GoID customers for a smooth, uninterrupted transition to the VIP Authentication Service.
Once completed, the team up will offer an estimated 40 million SecurID users the ability to join the VIP service.
