The ongoing battle between Apple Inc. and persistent iPhone jail-breakers continues this week after the hacking community offered up a fresh volley of smartphone freedom in the shape of the newly unleashed ‘Blackra1n’ solution.

According to mounting reports, this particular (Windows-only) jailbreak breaks through the iPhone 3.1.2 operating system and covers both the iPhone smartphone and the non-telephonic iPod Touch multimedia handset – however, it does not free Apple’s devices for use on non-supported networks.
Softpedia notes that the ‘Blackra1n’ jailbreak has been crafted by a hacker known as ‘GeoHot’ and follows the similarly named ‘Purplera1n’ solution previously forth by said hacker to unlock iPhone and iPhone 3GS handsets operating on the iPhone 3.1 operating system.
Of course, while The Tech Herald in no way condones the shady usage of such software solutions, the ‘Blackra1n’ jailbreak is freely available and can be downloaded quickly and easily via this URL link. Don’t do it.
Before ‘not doing it’, bear in mind that if you’ve updated Apple’s mobile operating system to 3.1 or beyond (beyond!) and did not use PwangeTool to upgrade a prior version, you won’t be able to unlock your handset until PwangeTool is itself upgraded accordingly.
