Happy with your versatile iPhone and all its multimedia goodness but wish the sassy little touch-screen device had the ability to play archaic radio? No, we couldn’t care less either… but apparently Apple is preparing a first-party software application (app) that will deliver just that.
Hopefully we won\'t have to strap one of these bad boys onto our iPhones. Image: mightyohm/Flickr.
According to unnamed sources cited by the technology watchers over at 9 to 5 Mac, Apple’s rumoured radio app will function in the background on both the iPhone and iPod Touch and will offer up the same functionality as the FM radio platform already in existence on the popular iPod Nano – suggests aspects such as live pausing and fast-forward when play is resumed.
Of course, with this being a radio platform crafted by Apple, compatibility with the Mobile iTunes Store will add an extra dimension of appeal with regard to the discovery of great song broadcasts that can be quickly searched for and purchased through Apple's store.
“For instance, if you like a song you are listening to on the radio… you will be able to push a button and see the song in the iTunes Mobile store,” outlined the 9 to 5 Mac reports. “With another click you’ll be able to make a purchase.”
While iTunes support will likely play a major role in attracting iPhone users, and potentially tempt prospective tech buyers away from Microsoft’s rival ZuneHD, Apple’s reported FM radio app isn’t the first to be available for the iPhone thanks to existing AM/FM alternatives such as WunderRadio.
