Clearly seeking to puff out its corporate chest and let rivals know its feathers are in no way ruffled by the gaming industry’s shifting tectonic plates, software giant Microsoft has insisted that the recent upturn of retail popularity attributed to Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) is nothing more than a short-term boon.
Moreover, speaking with popular gaming magazine Game Informer, Microsoft executive Aaron Greenberg acknowledged the recent PS3 sales spike after Sony dropped its hardware prices and released a PS3 Slim revamp, but said Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform will still emerge victorious in the longer term.
“We fully expect PlayStation 3 will come in as the console with the most units sold for the month [of September],” commented Greenberg regarding upcoming NPD sales figures. “What I can tell you is we remain confident that Xbox 360 will not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation.”
Adding a little more weight to Microsoft’s confident belief, Greenberg also suggested Sony’s recent PlayStation 3 price cuts cast further doubt over whether the Japanese electronics giant’s business model is sustainable – especially given that Sony has already said it is losing money on every PS3 sold.
“I believe this generation Microsoft has diversified the business model and the economics of the industry today is that our business is about not just hardware, but also software and services,” added Greenberg.
