Following up on recent rumours suggesting Barnes & Noble is preparing to enter the electronic book reader market, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the prominent bookseller will today whip the covers of anticipation off its ‘Nook’ platform at a special media event.

Citing a New York Times print ad slated for publication on October 25, the Journal goes one step further with its Nook coverage insofar as the portable eBook reader will supposedly come equipped with a full colour display, touch-screen functionality, and a price tag rivalling Amazon’s popular Kindle device.
Other attributes said to be crammed into the Nook include E-Ink screen technology, wireless download support, and possibly even Wi-Fi connectivity.
Although Barnes & Noble is yet to officially comment on the speculation surrounding its Nook reader, a price of $259 USD and direct support from the recently opened Barnes & Noble download store could well see the device mount a serious challenge against both Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader.
Stories surrounding the Nook come hot on the heels of Amazon finally moving to widen the market spread of its Kindle beyond the United States to include untapped territories such as the United Kingdom and Germany.
