As with most rumours in the technology industry that eventually come to fruition, the much talked about Barnes & Noble electronic reader has now been confirmed, after the bookseller officially unveiled its snazzy new ‘Nook’ device on Tuesday.

With an accompanying price tag of $259 USD, which matches the cheapest available variant of Amazon’s rival Kindle, the oddly named Nook reader boasts dual screens, a touch-sensitive user interface, wireless 3G connectivity support through American telecommunications giant AT&T, and storage space for around 1,500 books.
Beyond its unique dual-screen layout, which includes a main greyscale E-Ink screen for reading and a smaller 3.5-inch colour screen for gesture-based download browsing, the Nook reader will also be powered by the Google-backed Android mobile operating system.
And, unlike the Kindle, the Nook takes advantage of LendMe technology, which will allow users to lend out their downloaded book titles to Nook-equipped friends for a period of two weeks. Nook owners will also be able to access Wi-Fi hotspots in Barnes & Noble retail stores.
For those eager to snap up the bookseller’s new device, the Nook is expected to hit retail before the end of November throughout some 800 Barnes & Noble stores in the United States. It is already available for pre-order on the official Barnes & Noble online store.
