Already widely regarded as one of gaming’s premiere first-person shooters (FPS), Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will soon receive a much-anticipated sequel. However, with the FPS genre suitably cornered, pre-release rumours suggest Modern Warfare 2 will support a new third-person viewpoint.

More pointedly, PS3 game footage recently leaked to the Internet seems to indicate that Activision and Infinity Ward’s upcoming sequel is seeking new ways to extend the original title’s winning appeal – which may carry weight with prospective buyers when considering the recent success of Naughty Dog’s third-person action epic Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
Whispers regarding a new third-person perspective began gathering momentum after the following clip suddenly appeared on the Net:
Although the prospect of extended longevity via third-person gameplay is undeniably tantalising, the clip itself is hard to assess given its extremely poor quality, and gaming cynics are suggesting the footage is actually nothing more than ‘spectator mode’, a passive viewpoint enabling online players to follow continuing multiplayer action whenever their character is killed.
That being said, hope springs eternal for expectant Modern Warfare 2 fans insofar as online spectator modes do not generally provide viewers with HUD (heads-up display) information such as remaining ammunition, mini-map positioning, and online multiplayer ranking.
Further fuelling the speculation, a list of varied online modes has also hit the Net, which just so happens to include teasingly vague references to ‘3rd Person Team Deathmatch’ and ‘3rd Person Cage Match’ along with the likes of more conventional modes such as ‘Free For All’, ‘Search and Destroy’, and ‘Demolition’.
While we do love a good rumour, we’d recommend taking this one with more than a grain of salt until developer Infinity Ward or publisher Activision steps from the shadows and offers a concrete confirmation.
Modern Warfare 2 is expected to arrive on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Games for Windows this coming this November 10.
