Despite having cornered the market when it comes to handheld videogame platforms, Japanese game legend Nintendo is reportedly planning to further strengthen the positioning of its DS console by unleashing yet another version.
Report: Revamped Nintendo DSi to sport larger screens
According to sources cited by the Nikkei business daily, Nintendo is currently developing a revamped iteration of the DSi portable gaming platform, which itself arrived in 2008 as the third DS model released since the clamshell console originally launched in the latter part of 2004.
If the report is accurate, Nintendo’s enhanced console will carry enlarged screen technology and is being created in response to complaints made by more elderly DS users who’ve struggled to fully enjoy the existing system’s twin 3.25-inch screens.
It is also believed the console’s boosted screen size – to more than four inches – will enable Nintendo to push the DS as a comprehensive multimedia device and better market it as a viable alternative to electronic book readers such as the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook.
The Nikkei report suggested Japanese gamers will be first to experience the enhanced DSi, and that the Chinese and South Korean markets will receive a tweaked version of the current DSi by the end of Q1, 2010, which will come equipped with increased anti-piracy protection.
Of course, as with all such stories that choose to withhold their sources, Nintendo has refused to either confirm or deny the report, saying only it will not comment on speculation and rumour.
