Lumension, a security vendor with a wide range of endpoint protection offerings, has added another layer of protection for customers using their whitelisting offering, Lumension Application Control. Customers using Application Control will now get the layered defense offered in Lumension AntiVirus.

Lumension AntiVirus (LAV) is another layer Lumension’s Application Control. In short, it will check for several vectors of attack in addition to what is already protected by Application Control itself.
According to company information, LAV will use signature protection to deal with both Malware and Spyware. The press release from the company says that it will hunt down all the typical Malware seen online, including keyloggers, Trojans, rootkits and more. Essentially, Lumension has offered an alternative to using a third party security application such as Norton or McAfee.
According to AVTest.org, the sophistication of Malware continues to increase. To date, more than 21 million unique instances of Malware have been identified, and that number continues to grow exponentially. For this reason, Lumension said that in addition to traditional scanning and whitelisting protections, the LAV offering will use other techniques to root out issues.
One of them is DNA and Sandboxing. DNA Matching identifies fragments of Malware that are often reused in new variants and attacks. By identifying this remnant, LAV can block new variants without the need for a full signature match.
The LAV SandBox executes suspect code in a fully virtual environment to identify malicious behavior. For Malware that refuses to work in a virtual setting, the Application Control and the Exploit Detection side to LAV, which detects and quarantines hidden or embedded Malware inside of disguised files and documents, will take over.
“While no current antivirus solution is 100 percent effective at combating signature-based attacks, there is a definite value in incorporating AV into an overall endpoint protection strategy,” said Mike Wittig, President and CTO of Lumension.
We’re a big fan of layers when it comes to security here at The Tech Herald. We’re also fans of what Lumension does, and have had several conversations with them in the past.
What we’re waiting for now are the results from using the Application Control with LAV in hardcore testing. There was no testing data available in the press release for the LAV offering, but if they are serious, Lumension will be submitting it for testing to all the corporate level reviewing companies soon.
More information on LAV is here.
