When contemplating an ocean dip, it’s something of a comfort to know that the kind of monstrous shark showcased in Spielberg’s hit movie Jaws is generally not a commonplace occupant of the rolling shallows.
Half the shark it used to be.
However, budding swimmers and surfers in Australia might be hogging the beach a little more this week following an extremely ‘Jaws-like’ spectacle.
Moreover, a hefty three-and-a-half metre white pointer shark has been found dead off the Queensland coastline sporting a series of bites that almost ripped its torso in two.
According to experts who have examined the bites torn into the unfortunate white pointer, it was killed by an even bigger shark – possibly another white pointer with a size of around six-metres (approx. 20 feet).
As a result, locals and visitors to the area near North Stradbroke Island, east of Brisbane, have been warned by authorities to refrain from entering the water for the time being.
And that warning is evidently being taken seriously by swimmers and surfers alike, some of which have clearly been left shocked by the horrific pictures accompanying the shark attack.
“Whatever attacked and took chunks out of this big shark must be massive,” commented 19-year-old Gold Coast resident Ashton Smith regarding the prowling beast.
“I’ve heard about this big one that’s lurking out there somewhere,” he added in a Daily Telegraph report. “We’re all being very, very cautious.”
Rather than being the losing party in a straight up shark-on-shark battle, it is believed the white pointer was fatally struck after becoming snared on a baited drumline designed to protect the island’s popular Cylinder, Deadman’s and Main beaches from nearby predators.
