Finally admitting defeat in the extremely competitive world of handheld gaming, Nokia Corp. has this week revealed that its long-suffering N-Gage platform is living on distinctly borrowed time.

More pointedly, Espoo-based Nokia, the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer, is pulling the plug on its revamped N-Gage platform in favour of shifting business focus to the steadily expanding game downloads offered through its Ovi Store.
According to Nokia, “the Ovi Store will be the new central place for all the mobile games that Nokia and other publishers offer from this point forward,” while games carried beneath the N-Gage brand can be purchased until the end of September 2010.
“As mobile gaming evolves and begins to encompass social gaming, we want to offer one store front with an even broader portfolio of game – games for everyone,” outlined Nokia through its N-Gage blog. “It’s much more convenient to have one place to get all your mobile games, and this it what Ovi Store provides.
“Mobile gaming is one of the most popular activities in the Ovi Store, with games being the #2 most downloaded category for premium content,” it added. “And besides having all mobile games in one place, people can access other services like Mail, Maps, Music and many more via www.ovi.com .”
The accompanying N-Gage.com Web site and community-based N-Gage Arena will remain in operation until the close of next year.
