Don’t look now, but the axle running beneath the Android bandwagon appears to be sagging with the weight of steadily increasing popularity. Specifically, Sony Ericsson has become the latest mobile phone manufacturer to leap aboard, courtesy of its flagship XPERIA X10 device.

Officially unveiled this Tuesday, the new X10 is the first Sony Ericsson platform to carry the Google-backed and open-source Android mobile operating system (v1.6), but that’s not the only feature prospective buyers can look forward to if they’re prepared to splash the cash.
More pointedly, the X10 includes a new UX (user experience) that Sony Ericsson claims will evolve across its product portfolio and expand over time while continuously introducing new features and capabilities that create a consistent experience that ably bridges communication, social media, and entertainment.
“The XPERIA X10 is a fantastic example of our make.believe philosophy because we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible and demonstrating that anything consumers can imagine, we can make possible,” enthused Rikko Sakaguchi, EVP and Chief Creation Officer at Sony Ericsson.
“With the X10, we are raising the bar we have set for ourselves with entertainment-rich phones likes the Aino and Satio by making communication more fun and playful, multiplying and enriching opportunities to connect,” he added.
Other contributing factors packed into the X10 include a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, HSPA and Wi-Fi, a 4.0-inch TFT touch-screen display (480 x 854), an 8.1 mega pixel camera (up to 16x digital zoom), A-GPS navigation, Bluetooth, USB support, and an 8GB microSD card in the box.
Preloaded software and services include Sony Ericsson’s Timescape, Mediascape, Home, and Sync, along with Google platforms such as Search, Calendar, Maps, Street View, Media Uploader, Talk, Voice Search, and YouTube.
While Sony Ericsson has not yet revealed full regional availability and related prices, the new XPERIA X10 (which was previously known as the Rachel) is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2010.
