The days of ‘regular’ videogame releases are gone, as evidenced by the increasingly luxurious or bizarre box-sets publishers are now prone to dangle before the buying public. The latest of these incentives arrives in the form of a limited availability Collectors’ Edition of upcoming sci-fi epic Mass Effect 2.

While certainly a far cry from the ridiculous fully functioning night-vision goggles bundled with the Prestige Edition of Activision’s Modern Warfare 2, the frontline Mass Effect 2 offering from Electronic Arts still easily eclipses the standard ‘case-disc-manual’ retail format.
Set to accompany the game’s official launch on January 26 of 2010 (January 29 in Europe), the Collectors’ Edition of the eagerly anticipated role-playing sequel will arrive in a “premium” tin case, along with a 48-page hardcover ‘Art of Mass Effect 2’ book, issue number one of the Mass Effect Redemption comic, and a special bonus DVD packed with behind-the-scenes clips and making-of videos.
And, if that weren’t enough to suitably dazzle Mass Effect fans, the tinned package will also provide players with unique in-game weaponry and armour delivered exclusively through the Collectors’ Edition release.
“We’re really excited to roll out this Collectors’ Edition featuring so many unique items, including special Collectors’ Edition armor and weapons and content that will surprise Mass Effect fans,” enthused Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Mass Effect developer BioWare.
“The limited edition comic book and bonus DVD will really enhance and expand the overall Mass Effect 2 experience,” he added.
The Mass Effect 2 Collectors’ Edition will retail for $69.99 USD on Xbox 360 and $59.99 USD on Games for Windows.
