Texas-based Dell Inc. might not be the first consumer electronics creator on your lips if asked to name a smartphone manufacturer of note (think Apple, Palm, Research in Motion), but that’s exactly the direction the heavyweight computer maker is pushing its business.

And, not just producing any old smartphone device, Dell’s upcoming line of Mini 3 handsets will also arrive as yet another platform equipped with the increasingly popular open-source Android mobile operating system.
Although scant little detail regarding technical specification has been divulged by Dell at this point, vice president of sales and marketing Michael Tatelman told Yahoo the Mini 3 will carry a 3.5-inch HD screen, a touch-based user interface, and support for a wealth of multimedia.
The Mini 3 official announcement comes after Dell and telecommunications partner China Mobile raised a few eyebrows in August when they unveiled a prototype model of the smartphone during a tech event in Beijing.
Dell’s debut smartphone line will initially receive a retail launch in both China and Brazil. The company has not said when or if the device will ever appear in the United States or Europe. It has also not discounted producing smartphone handsets that are powered by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating platform.
