Having recently broadened the capabilities of its PlayStation 3 console through the integration of Facebook, electronics giant Sony Corp. is now rumoured to be preparing to give online PS3 customers access to Mozilla’s open-source Firefox browser.

Moreover, the diligent folks over at PlayStation Insider claim to have heard through the gaming grapevine that Sony is emerged in talks with the Mozilla Corporation that could result in the PS3’s generic and unimpressive default Web browser being eschewed in favour of the popular Firefox platform.
“Throwing Firefox into the mix would give PS3 the ultimate advantage when it comes to Internet functionality,” offered the online fan site. “PSInsider will be sure to bring you any updates to this rumor as they become available.”
Although clearly enthused by the prospect of Firefox making an appearance on the PlayStation 3, the seemingly well-informed industry watchers have not divulged the source behind their information – which subsequently means shoving this particular slice of unsubstantiated speculation in the ‘dubious until proven otherwise’ file.
Despite Sony’s best efforts in the social media scene, this week’s v3.10 PS3 firmware update and its accompanying Facebook integration leaves the company still playing catch-up against Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform, which has just rolled out Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm.
“Launching Facebook for the PlayStation community is a natural fit for our goal of delivering unparalleled connected experiences – from connecting our community to each other to connecting our customers to great entertainment downloaded from the PlayStation Store,” trumpeted PlayStation Network senior director Susan Panico ahead of the v3.10 firmware release.
“As we pass the third anniversary of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network, we’re excited to deepen the social experiences of PlayStation Network and kick-off the first phase of our integration with Facebook,” she added.
