Considering the focused retail heat created by Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Assassin's Creed 2, you'd perhaps be forgiven for thinking the software calendar is now facing a cool down period after such a sudden influx of big name videogame releases. Happily, you'd be wrong.

Set to continue the current trend of series sequels, the next chapter of BioWare's sprawling Mass Effect saga is now looming on the horizon and -- having spent some valuable alone time with the game during Gamescom in Koln -- I think it's safe to say established fans of the critically acclaimed original are likely to be thrilled.
Further contributing to the gathering anticipation for Mass Effect 2, developer BioWare has this week followed an official game Web site overhaul by unleashing a couple of brand new trailers and a bunch of sexy screenshots to better showcase what the game has to offer.
PC-based fans have also received the game's official minimum requirements list, which highlight a 15GB hard drive, a 1.8GHz processor, 1GB of RAM for Windows XP and 2GBs of RAM for Vista/Windows 7, DirectX 9.0c (which is included), and a 256MB video card.
Chipset compatibility starts from the ATI Radeon X1600 Pro and NVIDIA GeForce 6800. GeForce 7300, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9300 chipsets, and the ATI Radeon HD3200 and HD4350 chipsets are listed as below Mass Effect 2's base requirement level and are not supported.
Presently, Mass Effect 2 is scheduled to appear on January 26 for both PC and Xbox 360, with BioWare continuing to employ evasive vagaries with regard to the game(s) appearing on Sony's powerhouse PlayStation 3.
"We're not saying anything about Mass Effect for PS3. I don't know anything about that!" exclaimed studio co-founder Greg Zeschuk when pressed by tech and gaming magazine Destructoid. "That's crazy talk," he added.
