After wowing industry watchers everywhere with record-breaking opening sales after its November 10 launch, the popularity of all-action militaristic sequel Modern Warfare 2 has now seen the combined Call of Duty franchise push beyond $3 billion USD at retail, according to market numbers from NPD Group and Charttrack.

Clearly proud of the bank-account-bursting achievement, Activision chief executive officer Bobby Kotick described Call of Duty as one of the “greatest entertainment franchises of all time,” thanks to more than 55 million unit sales across six different titles since 2003.
“If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history,” he exclaimed in an official release.
Having swiftly outsold previous opening day and opening week record holder Grand Theft Auto IV, the Infinity Ward-developed Modern Warfare 2 has since planted itself firmly at the top of the gaming chart – and recently saw off the stiff challenge of Ubisoft’s hot selling Assassin’s Creed 2.
Market performance figures further outline that Modern Warfare 2 made approximately $550 million USD in its first five days of availability and sold a staggering 4.7 million units in the United States and United Kingdom during its first 24 hours at retail.
