Internet pioneer Yahoo Inc. has released its annual list of the year’s most popular search criteria, which is topped, perhaps unsurprisingly, by recently deceased ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson.

Yahoo’s list, much like the one published each year by search leader Google Inc., provides a sense of cultural interests and trends across the Internet. Google’s own listings are expected to arrive towards the close of December.
In leading Yahoo’s statistical chart, Michael Jackson and his controversial death successfully pushed singer Britney Spears down to fifth place – ending four consecutive years of top-spot finishes for the enduring pop princess.
While Jackson’s death clearly created massive international momentum within Yahoo’s search community, 2009 also saw plenty of coverage amassed by the likes of teen vampire franchise Twilight and increasingly popular actress Megan Fox, which entered the chart at number two and number four respectively.
The top 10 search listings on Yahoo’s chart were padded out by popular performers from 2008, such as sports entertainment juggernaut WWE, Japanese anime character Naruto, the American Idol talent contest, and online computer game RuneScape.
Searches suffering a notable drop off in 2009 included the likes of Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Lindsey Lohan, and Miley Cyrus.
