Activision’s all-action sequel (Call of Duty) Modern Warfare 2 may well be the biggest game of 2009 for us Westerners, but for folk over in Japan – who’ve never been big on first-person shooters – there’s a wholly different gaming juggernaut about to rock their year.
Translation? \'Finally!\' Image: Square Enix.
Although not scheduled to hit stores in North America and Europe until March 09 of 2010, eagerly awaited role-playing adventure Final Fantasy XIII officially launched across the Japanese territory today, and the queues of dedicated PlayStation 3 owners amassed before prominent retail outlets suggests the latest series offering is going to sell by the truckload.
Cash registers starting ringing at 07:00 local time as hundreds of prospective buyers – some of which were dressed in game garb and had apparently been lining the streets since noon of the previous day – steadily shuffled forward and handed over their money before turning for home in order to (call in a sick day and) lose themselves in the new Square Enix epic.
If the judgement of leading Japanese videogame magazine Famitsu is to be trusted (and it generally is) then Final Fantasy XIII is well worth waiting for. The magazine recently awarded the game 39/40 in its official review.
In related news, publisher Enterbrain has this week revealed that, as of December 13, Japanese consumers have snapped up more than four million units of Sony’s powerhouse PlayStation 3 videogames console since it launched in November of 2006.
