Clumsy Xbox thief leaves IP trail for New York cops

Crime doesn’t pay at any time of the year, and the police in New York are no more lenient at Christmas – as a light-fingered resident of the Bronx has discovered during this apparent season of good will to all men.

Specifically, 22-year-old hardware thief Jeremiah Gilliam is presently having his collar felt by tech-savvy cops from Pelham, New York, after they tracked his geographical positioning via the IP address of the stolen Xbox 360 videogames console he was using to play games online.Tracing Gilliam’s whereabouts to a physical address registered to his grandmother, police arrived on scene to discover, not only the Xbox 360 in question, but also dozens of videogames, notebook computers, GPS systems and stolen credit cards, all of which are thought to have been ‘liberated’ from cars and residences throughout Westchester County.Police in Pelham were first alerted to Gilliam’s virtual trail after the Xbox 360’s diligent owner spotted that his system was active online when he accessed Microsoft’s Xbox Live service through another console.
