Always moving and shaking in order to keep its product portfolio from becoming stale while holding the competition at arm’s length, gadget giant Apple is rumoured to be preparing an 8GB version of its latest iPhone 3GS smartphone handset.

While, of course, Cupertino-based Apple is famous for not commenting on such speculation, whispers are gathering momentum after Electronista reported that a consumer in Hamburg, Germany, had purchased a refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G sporting a back-side label proclaiming it to be an ‘iPhone 3GS v2.2, 8GB’.
According to the surprised owner, both the model number and part number attributed to the refurbished handset were correct for the existing iPhone 3G iteration of Apple’s popular smartphone – however, other elements of the device’s packaging made clear reference to an 8GB iPhone 3GS.
If the rumour is found to be cutting the retail mustard as opposed to the technology cheese, the upcoming 8GB iPhone 3GS handset will drop below the current 16GB iPhone 3GS ($199 USD) as the smallest capacity offering in Apple’s 3GS stable and could potentially replace the 8GB iPhone 3G ($99 USD).
In related news, recent reports have suggested Apple has scheduled a media press event for January 26 of 2010, during which the computer and gadget specialist is expected to reveal a selection of new products.
