The end of 2010 may see tablet computers crowned as ‘the new big thing’ in the world of consumer electronics, but, given the growing desire for digital books, the portable eBook reader is likely to run a close second.

Bearing that in mind, current platforms such as the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader and Barnes & Noble Nook have now (finally) been joined by a Plastic Logic electronic reader that’s been looming large on the horizon for many, many months.
Unveiled during this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the new Que reader stands apart from the aforementioned devices as it has been crafted to cater specifically for busy on-the-go professionals.
As such, the Que arrives as an extra thin (less than one third of an inch) and lightweight platform equipped with a generous 10.7-inch screen (greyscale) – which is certainly roomy enough to handle the business publications, professional periodicals and daily newspapers it has been designed to host.
As well as providing support for electronic books and document formats such as PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, the Que also boasts a touch-screen interface and the biggest touch-screen display presently available in the eReader sector.
“The Que proReader was built from the ground up for people who need to read,” commented Plastic Logic CEO Richard Archuleta in a statement. “Starting today, mobile professionals can look forward to a paperless briefcase, a lighter load, and a better way to work.”
Also, not that prospective buyers will be looking to hurl bricks at their new Que, but California-based Plastic Logic is keen to point out that such reckless conduct may go unnoticed thanks to the Que’s exclusive shatterproof display.
Other contributing features and functions attributed to the Que include E Ink Vizplex technology, optional wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi and AT&T’s broadband 3G network, and content support from the Barnes & Noble eBookstore – the largest such online store on the Internet.
The 4GB Wi-Fi version of the Que will cost $649 USD, while the 8GB model with both Wi-Fi and 3G will sting pockets to the tune of $799 USD. Already in the process of accepting orders for the Que, Plastic Logic has indicated the device will begin shipping in April.
