Let’s face it, working at Google would be a decent gig for those who have the qualifications. However, those who have recently applied at Google, and more likely those who never sent an application in the first place, are getting resume confirmations from an alleged Google email account, complete with a nicely worded letter and Malware.
Google applicants targeted in new scam.(IMG:Google)
“We just received your resume and would like to thank to for your interest in working at Google,” the letter starts. It goes on to explain that the “staffing team” will look the resume over and get back to you if there is a match for current needs.
If you never applied to Google in the first place, then the letter is suspect. The other suspicious aspect to the email is the attachment, using both an .exe extension and a .zip extension. Sometimes, at least in the examples used by Websense and other reports online, the extensions could also include .pdf and .html.
However, there is one interesting aspect to this malicious email that is missing when you consider other scams. The grammar, spelling, and phrasing are all spot on and the fake Google offer is rather professional looking.
There is a touch of irony in the fact that all the effort was made to pull off a clean looking message, and then the scam is blown by an easily spotted naming con that attempts to disguise the actual file type.
The image below is an example of the fraudulent email.
