The definition of ‘passionate gaming geek’ has taken a whole new slant this week after an eBay buyer with deep pockets splashed an exorbitant amount of cash on a 20-year-old Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) videogame console.
Utter lunacy! Image: eBay.
However, it wasn’t the console that attracted the eye – and the $13,105 USD – of said eBay shopper, but rather the extremely rare track-and-field ‘Stadium Events’ videogame that came bundled with it.
First published by Bandai back in 1987, Stadium Events is lauded by collectors as one of the gaming world’s most sought after software releases, with only a few copies thought to be left in circulation.
Frantic auction-based interest in the tantalising NES bundle began to build the instant it appeared on eBay’s pages on February 03. The opening bid price of $9.99 USD rocketed to more than $5,000 USD in just a few hours – reaching beyond $13,000 USD when the auction closed on February 10.
In full working order and equipped with a single game controller, the console bundle also netted the lucky eBay winner Super Mario 3, Duck Hunt, Major League Baseball, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game.
