According to a statement from Activision, the Santa Monica-based company intends to expand its hit property by focusing on existing titles through digital online content while also creating at least one new Call of Duty entrant every year, and striding bravely into previously uncharted territory.
Specifically, while Activision has announced upcoming map packs from Infinity Ward for Modern Warfare 2, and that stalwart series developer Treyarch will deliver a first-person shooter entrant this coming autumn, a fresh-faced action adventure Call of Duty is also in the offing from Sledgehammer Games.
Although little is known about the title at this juncture, Activision has teased that the game will be ready for a 2011 release and is in the capable hands of Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey, who played pivotal roles in the creation of award-winning sci-fi adventure Dead Space while with Visceral Games.
“2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise,” said Mike Griffith, president and chief executive at Activision Publishing. “In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players.”
Activision’s most recent Call of Duty game (Modern Warfare 2) was released in November of 2009 and quickly became the year’s best-selling release. It has since helped pump Activision’s profit margins by 60 percent thanks to unit sales in excess of 15 million.
