The scale of Apple’s success with the iPad will be drawn into (a slightly) clearer focus later today when prospective customers in the United States will be officially able to register a pre-order for the highly anticipated tablet computer.

Pre-orders for the Wi-Fi version of Apple’s touch-screen device will open on Friday morning (0530 PST and 0830 EST) in preparation for the iPad’s retail launch this coming April 03. The pre-order process currently excludes the high-speed 3G version of the iPad, which is expected to arrive in the latter part of April.
If you’re interested in getting a slinky slice of the tablet-shaped action, the 16GB iPad with Wi-Fi connectivity comes attached to a $499 USD price tag. The larger 32GB and 64GB models cost $599 USD and $699 USD respectively. All of Apple’s iPad variants are supported exclusively by telecommunications provider AT&T.
While we here at The Tech Herald would never attempt to stay your retail hand when it comes to buying new tech, it is perhaps worth bearing in mind that Apple has said it will consider a price cut for the iPad soon after launch – depending on how the device sells.
Pre-order now, pay full whack, and get your iPad. Or, wait a couple of weeks, take advantage of a possible price drop, get your iPad. Either way, you get your iPad, but the latter approach means you can save a few pennies.
Also, as with any new gadget, waiting a little while before buying enables you to gauge the level of consumer complaints regarding bugs, stability problems, connectivity failures and compatibility issues.
