In the same week iSuppli market research has shown Intel to have increased its dominance in the CPU market, mainstay rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has moved to deflect focus away its own second-quarter shortfall by introducing a new $100 USD quad-core processing platform.
The newly announced quad-core X4 620 arrives as part of the chipmaker’s Athlon II line, which has been crafted on energy efficient 45nm (nanometer) architecture and fully optimised to work alongside Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 7 operating system.
According to AMD, the Athlon II X4 620 is part of a new desktop platform designed for mainstream consumers and, more notably, is the first ever quad-core processor available for purchase at less than $100 USD.
Further to that, AMD also offers that by balancing the power of its new Athlon II X4 quad-core line with the 785 chipset and ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics solution, consumers are granted access to smooth high-definition visuals and the foundation for a great user experience following the introduction of Windows 7.
“Step up to AMD Athlon II processors and easily tackle more important tasks at once,” exclaims the chipmaker. “Get an exceptional PC experience where everything on your computer looks amazing and runs smoothly thanks to superior multi-tasking power.”
Other features attributed to the Athlon II X4 620 include accelerated 3D performance, MCE video playback, virtual XP support, integrated power management, and also support for DirectX 10.1 gaming and ATI Stream technologies.
