ASUS Twitters away its Seashell on the seashore

Not that buying a Netbook computer will set you back a bank-breaking amount of money when compared to regular notebooks, but in these times of supposedly dire economic crisis it’s always good to know there are technological freebies to be had – which is where ASUS comes in.
Having almost single-handedly crafted the ultra mobile category with its eponymous Eee PC line, Taiwan-based Netbook giant ASUSTeK is utilising the popularity of Twitter to boost its product marketing and give lucky folks in the United Kingdom a succession of chances to scoop a new wafer thin Seashell system.
Starting today, and running once a week for the next fours weeks, anyone ‘following’ ASUS through its Twitter feed will be eligible for random selection to win a really rather lovely looking Eee PC 1008HA Seashell computer.
And, if that weren’t incentive enough, if you happen to be wandering along Tottenham Court Road in central London today, then ASUS is further flogging the Seashell brand by inviting willing passersby to have their photographs taken on a manmade ASUS beach.
Beyond the abject humiliation such a stunt is likely to cause for prudish Brits, not least if it’s raining, each beach-bound photo captured by ASUS will be assessed online through a public jury with the best pose and composition awarded… you guessed it… a spanking new Eee PC 1008HA Seashell.
For those not yet acquainted with the Eee PC 1008HA, it’s sleekly thin, has a pearl white exterior casing, weighs a whisker over a kilo and could certainly be seen as something of a poor man’s MacBook Air (kind of).
Assessment gets more grounded in terms of hardware, with the pretty aesthetics hiding what is, let’s not forget, a free but budget-styled portable computer. That equates to a 10.1-inch LCD display, Intel’s Atom N280 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GBs of storage, and a further 10GBs free online.
Other elements include a 92 percent full-size keyboard, HSDPA and Draft-N wireless connectivity, a multi-touch keypad, Windows XP, and a 1.3 mega pixel Web camera.
Passable specs. But, hey, it is FREE though.
Update: The Tottenham Court Road opportunity has now closed, the final snap was (forcibly?) taken at 14:00 GMT.
