With Barnes & Noble increasing the appeal of the upcoming Reader via support from its new online bookstore, a fresh piece of related news regarding AT&T adds yet more validity to the Plastic Logic device as a rival for Amazon’s popular Kindle.
Specifically, Plastic Logic has revealed that its handheld Reader, which is being targeted more towards mobile professionals than general consumers, will be carried wirelessly on AT&T’s high-speed 3G network when it arrives in the early part of 2010.
While the device manufacturer has not revealed exact details pertaining to its deal with AT&T, the online access provided will allow Reader users to connect wirelessly to the network in order to browse, buy and download all manner of text-based content such as books, magazines and newspapers.
“There is tremendous market potential for electronic reading devices, and we look forward to powering this revolutionary device with the nation’s fastest 3G network,” trumpeted Glenn Lurie, president of emerging devices at AT&T.
Sporting portable-friendly dimensions of 8.5 inches by 11 inches and a ‘thickness’ of less than an inch, the Reader will also have an easy-on-the-eyes E Ink display screen and will support PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents.
