Looking to increase its exposure in a market dominated by the likes of Norton and McAfee, Dutch anti-virus and Internet security specialist AVG Technologies has this week acquired behaviour-based software company Sana Security.

Officially announced on Tuesday, AVG revealed that California-based Sana Security’s expertise in real-time behavioural threat detection and identity theft prevention will arrive as welcome components for AVG’s overall portfolio of Internet security technologies.

According to J. R. Smith, chief executive officer of AVG, the acquisition of Sana Security will also see customers of the Amsterdam-based company receiving access to new automatic and proactive malware removal tools.

By expanding the effectiveness of its services, AVG will rely on Sana Security’s behavioural technology to help provide better protection for users’ login details, passwords, and other financial, personal and critical information stored on their computers.

Looking more closely at the Sana Security assets likely to positively impact AVG’s new and existing customers, real-time threat detection battles to stamp out botnets, rootkits, spyware and Trojans, while behavioural software monitors and learns from a system’s application interactions and strives to eliminate any resulting attacks that compromise those normal processes.

In terms of availability, Smith outlined that Sana Security’s technologies will be applied to AVG’s anti-virus suite and also its comprehensive Internet suite by the end of Q2, 2009. A standalone version of the technologies could also be released at some point in the future.
