While you’d be forgiven for glancing at the above slice of portable hardware and dismissing it as ‘just another Netbook’ to throw atop the growing pile of budget computers, this little baby is none other than the much rumoured 10-inch Acer Aspire One.
Sporting a positively professional gleam that helps raise it above most other Netbook offerings in an aesthetic sense – not least because of its 10-inch LCD display and 1024x600 resolution – the new ultra portable Aspire is powered by Intel Corporation’s popular 1.6GHz Atom processor and up to 2GBs of RAM. An enhanced 1.86GHz processor is also likely to be available, although that hasn't been confirmed by Acer.
Data storage is taken care of by a 160GB hard drive, while Microsoft’s Windows XP provides the operating software and connectivity arrives in the form of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s worth noting that both WiMAX and high-speed 3G performance are also available as optional extras.
In terms of mobile longevity, the new One – which is set to completely replace the existing 8.9-inch variant – should, according to Acer, provide up to seven hours of on-the-go operation thanks to a 6-cell battery and the One’s much touted low-power consumption.
Set to hit retail in a variety of colour options, including black, grey and red, the new 10-inch Aspire One continues the current trend of Netbook manufacturers leaning their budget hardware more towards traditional notebook screen sizes and away from the diminutive 7-inch products that first shot to prominence through the ASUS Eee PC.
The new Acer Aspire One is expected to ship throughout the United States this coming February attached to a thoroughly acceptable price of $399 USD.
